Billy Winter's Log Cabin Saloon and Stag Beer Mug or Stein

Ca 1900 Portland, Oregon Saloon / Barroom "Art Decorated", Milk Glass Beer Mug / Stein manufactured by the Westmoreland Glass Company in the "Rookwood Brown" color and featuring a fantastic interior view of "Billy Winter's Log Cabin Saloon".

This outstanding transfer decorated Saloon Advertising Beer Mug measures approx. 4 5/8” tall and 3 3/4” in diameter at the base. It features a fantastic image of the interior of a rustic looking Portland, Oregon Saloon / Barroom with wooden Beer Kegs lined up against the wall of a log cabin Saloon with bartenders or patrons tapping the kegs. Text above and below the interior view reads "Billy Winter's Log Cabin / 167 Third Street, Near Morrison, Portland, Oregon". The back side of the Mug features an image of an impressive stag Elk and the handle is "twig form" molded.

There has been found a smattering of information about the Portland, Oregon Saloon named "Billy Winter's Log Cabin". While one source states that it was opened at the time of the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition held at Portland, we have found advertising Postcards and trade cards for the Saloon that date to the late 1890's and early 1900's. A ca1899, real photo postcard pictures the Saloon interior with a front bar blocking access to the lineup of Beer Kegs seen in the illustration on this Mug. In fact the front bar seen on the postcard is actually a massive aquarium with live fish and our guess is that the view on the Mug pre-dates that on the real photo postcard.
